Tailored to correct developing problems in the 7-11 year-old age group (some permanent and some primary ("baby") teeth) utilizing many different types of orthodontic appliances. Some of the more commonly-used appliances in this age group include the following:
- Palatal Expansion Appliance: This appliance is most often used in growing patients that have narrow palates. It is attached permanently to the teeth and slowly expanded by the patient.
- Upper or Lower Holding Arch: This appliance is typically used during the period of time when children are losing the last of their primary teeth, to preserve space and allow the permanent teeth to erupt properly.
- Habit Appliances: Used to discourage persistent oral habits such as thumbsucking or tongue-thrusting.
- Combo Appliance: A family of appliances incorporating palatal expansion with one or more other functions, such as bite correction, bite opening, etc. These appliances are replacing the headgear ("night brace") in many cases.
- Headgear: The more traditional appliance used to reduce large overbites, used in growing patients. Good results depend on consistent wear over a period of time to allow bite correction by growth modification.
